Dragon 2
After interning with the Dragon primary structures team in 2020, working on Dragon 2 CRS design and qualification for miscellaneous internal secondary structures, I returned full time to the trunk structures team. There I worked as a responsible engineer (RE) on sustaining engineering of trunk systems (radiators, solar arrays, aerocovers, separation mechanisms, and the like), as well as a few design overhauls to reduce the sustaining engineering and production cost of certain subsystems.
The trunk is expended with each mission, making it the "high rate" product of the Dragon program and increasing the return on smaller design optimizations. My redesigns included a clean-slate redo of the costly composite aerocovers, transitioning them to metallic formed parts, along with a number of smaller improvements to the solar array system.
The exposure to an operational program like Dragon was fantastic for my growth, but I found myself wanting to work closer to the frontier of SpaceX's product development...
